Concuera (Simara Island)

Also known as Simara Island, Corcuera got its name from its shape, which looks like a hook or sima in the local term. But it was first referred to in 1574 by the Spaniards as San Jose. Afterward, Augustinian Recollect missionaries converted Simara locals into Christianity.

The island was invaded during World War II, and the Japanese built a garrison that still stands today. Today, it’s referred to as the Municipality of Corcuera, named after the Spanish governor-general Sebastián Hurtado de Corcuera, ruling the Philippines from 1635 to 1644.
