Rich in History and Culture
Alcantara’s history can be traced back to the time of the Spanish conquest in 1572. Its first inhabitants were reportedly a group of seafarers from China who settled along the coast and intermarried with local women.
The town’s cultural heritage is best preserved in its churches, which are considered among some of the oldest on Romblon Island. The Church of St. Michael Archangel was built in 1633 by Father Juan de San Miguel de Alcantara, while Our Lady of Assumption Parish Church was erected in 1783 under Father Mateo Rodriguez dela Cruz, the same priest who established Tablas Island’s Santa Barbara Mission.
The Famous Banga Rice Terraces
The famous Banga Rice Terraces in Romblon are carved into the mountainside. This means that they’re very steep, and can be slippery if it’s been raining recently. You should exercise caution when climbing them, especially if you have any mobility issues or other health concerns that may prevent you from walking long distances on uneven terrain.
