History

The Municipality of Ferrol Romblon is a fourth class municipality in the province of Romblon, Philippines. According to the 2015 census, it has a population of 10,413 people.

Ferrol was created as a town on June 15, 1854. It was formerly part of the municipality of Badajoz and became an independent municipality on January 1, 1855. It was named after General Francisco Franco y Bahamonde (1892-1975), who was the dictator of Spain from 1939 to 1975.

On April 7, 1942, Japanese forces invaded and occupied Ferrol during World War II. The Japanese Imperial Army massacred more than 500 civilians in what is known as the Ferrol Massacre.

After the war, Ferrol was merged with the municipality of Badajoz on June 21, 1949. It became an independent municipality again on October 26, 1954 by virtue of Republic Act No. 1266.

Geography

The municipality of Ferrol Romblon is located in the province of Romblon, on the island of Romblon, in the Philippines. The municipality has a total land area of 8,862 hectares and a population of 21,536 people.

The municipality is divided into 11 barangays, all of which are located within the island of Romblon. The barangays are grouped into three clusters: Cluster 1 consists of barangays Bolbok, Calatrava, and Cutad; Cluster 2 consists of barangays Pagnamitan and Santa Cruz; and Cluster 3 consists of barangays Bagumbayan, Binakasan, Bunga, Cajidiocan, Can-uba, and Guinjawa.

Ferrol Romblon is situated along the northeastern coast of the island of Romblon. It is bounded by the municipalities of San Fernando to the north, Banton to the west, Magdiwang to the south, and Alcantara to the east.

The municipality has a tropical climate with an average temperature of 27 degrees Celsius. The months of March to May are considered as the hot season while June to October are relatively cooler. November to February are considered as the wet season in Ferrol Romblon due to frequent rainfall brought about by northeast monsoon or “amihan”.
