The municipality has a land area of 41.48 square kilometers and a population of 17,349 people as of the 2015 census. The town is known for its Carabao-drawn carts, which are used for transportation within the municipality. Alcantara is also home to the Mag-aso Falls, which is a popular tourist destination.

The town was named after Don Francisco Xavier de la Santisima Trinidad Ruiz de Alcantara y Sotomayor Zuniga, fifth Marquis of Alcantara and Viceroy of New Spain. He was born in Madrid on May 15, 1614 and died on January 1, 1696. He was a Spanish general during the Eighty Years’ War (1568-1648) and later served as Viceroy of New Spain (1680-1686).
The municipality celebrates its foundation day every year on June 25.
