History
The Municipality of Alcantara was created on June 25, 1969, by virtue of Republic Act No. 5861. It is located in the central part of the province of Romblon, Philippines. It has a total land area of 97.06 square kilometers and a population of 21,473 as of 2010. The municipality is bounded by the municipalities of Magdiwang to the north, San Agustin to the south, and Ferrol to the east. It is approximately 4 hours away from Manila by boat.
The town was named after Don Francisco Xavier de la Santisima Trinidad Ruiz de Alcantara y Sotomayor Zuniga, fifth Marquis of Alcantara and Viceroy of New Spain. He was born in Madrid on May 15, 1614 and died on January 1, 1696. He was a Spanish general during the Eighty Years’ War (1568-1648) and later served as Viceroy of New Spain (1680-1686).
The municipality celebrates its foundation day every year on June 25.
